Dear Families,

In 2015, the PARCC Assessment replaced the Illinois Standards Achievement Test (ISAT) as Illinois’ statewide assessment. Illinois students in grades 3-8 took the PARCC exam for the first time during two sessions in March and May. The rigor of the PARCC assessment exceeds that of the ISAT. It also measures different skills such as students’ critical thinking, problem solving, and writing, which are necessary for students to succeed in high school and beyond.

In releasing the preliminary statewide results, State Superintendent Tony Smith announced that due to the shift to the Common Core State Standards and the increased rigor of the assessment, the percentage of students meeting or exceeding standards statewide has decreased. Dr. Smith noted that these initial score results create a new baseline from which the state will move forward. The change is a reflection of how high-stakes assessments have evolved to meet more demanding standards that promote college and career readiness.

The PARCC score reports show how each child performed on each portion of the test. They identify an overall score in one of five performance levels:

  • Students whose scores fall within levels 1 or 2 require greater support to understand content.
  • Students receiving a 3 are approaching expectations and need additional assistance to master content.
  • Students who receive a 4 have a thorough understanding of grade-level content and students who receive a 5 have exceeded grade-level expectations.

Please keep in mind that no one test, in isolation, should be emphasized to determine the success of a child, teacher, school or district. The PARCC data, along with our other data sources are used to help differentiate instruction for your student.

If you would like to access additional information about the statewide results, please visit the ISBE website at this link: If after reading this information you still have questions about your child’s progress, please call us at Medinah Middle School at 630-893-3838.
