Dear Families of Medinah Middle School Students,

I hope that you are enjoying summer and having time for family, fun, and relaxation. We are busy preparing for the 2017-2018 school year. This letter contains important information for the beginning of the new school year.

WELCOME BACK EVENT

·        We will be hosting our 6th Grade Orientation on Tuesday, August 22rd beginning at 5:00PM.   At this event you will have a chance to:

·         Meet and greet some teachers and the principal

·         Find your locker

·         Practice your combination

·         Find out more about your schedule and classes

·         Explore the layout of the school

·         Re-connect with families and friends

REGISTRATION

Students should already be registered for the 2017-2018 school year.  Early registration of students ensures that we will have enough teachers, supplies, and space for our students on the first day of school Wednesday, August 23rd.  You will receive a phone call from office personnel if you have not completed registration materials for your student(s).  If you have new neighbors, please make sure that they have contacted the school to register any new students.  Your help will be invaluable in making sure we are ready for the first day of school.  Thank you in advance for your help!

FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL

Our first day of school will be Wednesday, August 23.

·        The starting time for ALL students will be 8:40 A.M.

·         Students are not to arrive before 8:15 A.M. any time during the school year. We do not have supervision before  that time.

·        Students will be given their new supplies during the course of the first few days of school.

WHAT’s NEW?

MMS has implemented a 1:1 Chromebook initiative for 2017-2018 school year.   Each student will have their own Chromebook to utilize throughout the school year.  We will be providing opportunities throughout the year to educate students how to effectively use and care for their device.  We will also hold a Chromebook Parent University prior to this year’s Curriculum Night. In addition, we have implemented a morning advisory period to promote school unity and to address the Social/Emotional Learning  standards.

From a cosmetic standpoint, we have relined the gym floor and added a permanent paw logo at center court.  In the middle school commons area, we have added equipment to allow the space to be utilized as an educational group area. In addition, we have updated both the nurse’s office and our STEM lab.

Finally, please be reminded, in order to promote healthy choices and support a culture of wellness at Medinah Middle School, along with our concern for food allergies and childhood obesity, treats for celebrations and special occasions in the form of food items will not be allowed. If a food item is brought in, they will not be served and will be sent home. Examples of what will no longer be allowed: cupcakes, donuts, etc., for birthday treats; pizza, pop, chips, etc., for sharing in lunch room.

REMINDERS

·       Students entering 6th grade must have a physical examination on file and proof of immunizations before the first day of school.  Forms are available in the school office or on the district website.

·       No medication can be dispensed to students without a written order from a physician.  Please call the school                office for more information if your child will require medication during the school day.

·       On Thursday, August 24th, the district will host a Welcome Back Coffee where staff and community may come meet the new teachers and the Board of Education at 7:00p.m. during the Board of Education Meeting at Middle School.

·       Medinah Middle School’s Curriculum Night is scheduled for Thursday, September 7th beginning at 6:00 P.M.

·       Medinah Middle School Parent/Teacher Conferences are set for the evening of Thursday, October 5th and the                morning of Friday, October 6th.

IN CLOSING

I am proud to lead such a wonderful school with amazing teachers, staff members, parents, and students.  I also want to take this opportunity to thank you in advance for your support of our school. Teachers and personnel are working hard to provide a quality education for your children. Your support and effort is critical in order to connect your child’s learning to everyday life.

I am strongly encouraging all parents to immediately become involved in your child’s learning this year. Please work with teachers and staff who can help you to provide your child with resources, encouragement, and support. School and home must work together on this educational journey to prepare our students in becoming college, career and community ready.

Also, talk to your child about school each night. It is important to ask questions to gauge your child’s feelings toward school and the progress they are making in and out of the classroom.

I look forward to working together this year. Please feel free to contact me at school if you have comments, questions, or concerns. We are off to a tremendous start together!

Sincerely,
George G. Gouriotis
